Sikkens Cetol HLSe - Basecoat or Standalone Timber System
Sikkens Cetol HLSe is an oil-based, deep-penetrating translucent timber stain. Sikkens describes it as the essential basecoat for Cetol topcoats on bare timber, while also allowing a three-coat standalone HLSe system for broad timber surfaces such as decks, cladding and screening.
HLSe is microporous, allowing timber to breathe while repelling unwanted moisture, and keeps the wood grain visible. Apply along the grain with a quality brush and follow the specified temperature, humidity and timber-moisture limits.
Cetol Filter 7 Plus for Vertical Exterior Timber
Cetol Filter 7 Plus is a medium-build translucent satin topcoat with UV and weather resistance for vertical timber such as windows, doors, fascias and cladding. The Sikkens system uses one coat of Cetol HLSe followed by two coats of Filter 7 Plus on bare timber.
Filter 7 Plus is not designed for walk-on surfaces or seating. For decks and other horizontal timber, use a deck-specific Sikkens product instead.
Sikkens Products for Decks & Horizontal Timber
For deck surfaces, use products designed for foot traffic such as Sikkens Cetol Deck or the dedicated slip-resistant deck finish where the project calls for it. Horizontal timber experiences standing water, abrasion and UV differently from vertical cladding, so it needs the correct deck system.
The collection also includes water-based options such as Cetol Supernatural and Cetol BLX Pro for compatible exterior timber projects where a water-based system is preferred.
Sikkens Timber Preparation & Cleaning
New and weathered timber need different preparation. Sikkens Cetol BL Deck & Wood Cleaner is designed for cleaning large timber areas, while Cetol BL Tannin & Oil Remover helps draw tannins and surface oils from tannin-rich new timber before coating.
Remove loose or failed old finishes, clean the surface and let timber dry to the moisture level specified by the coating. For step-by-step deck maintenance, see Paint World’s How to Oil Your Deck and the broader Decking & Wood Care range.
How to Choose the Right Sikkens Product
- Bare vertical windows, doors, cladding -> HLSe + Filter 7 Plus -> Filter 7 Plus is for vertical timber, not walk-on surfaces
- Decking / horizontal timber -> Cetol Deck or deck-specific system -> Use a product rated for horizontal traffic
- One-product translucent timber system -> 3 coats HLSe where approved -> Follow Sikkens system directions
- Water-based exterior timber finish -> Supernatural or BLX Pro -> Match product to surface and exposure
- New tannin-rich timber -> BL Tannin & Oil Remover + correct coating system -> Prepare oils/tannins before coating
- Weathered/dirty timber -> BL Deck & Wood Cleaner + surface prep -> Remove contamination before recoating

Sikkens FAQs
What is Sikkens Cetol used for?
Sikkens Cetol is a range of translucent timber finishes used to protect and decorate exterior wood while keeping the grain visible. Different products are designed for vertical timber, decks, furniture and preparation.
What is the difference between Cetol HLSe and Filter 7 Plus?
HLSe is a penetrating basecoat that can also be used as a three-coat standalone system on approved timber. Filter 7 Plus is a higher-build UV-resistant topcoat for vertical timber and is normally applied as two coats over one coat of HLSe.
Can I use Sikkens Filter 7 Plus on a deck?
No. Sikkens states that Filter 7 Plus is not suitable for walk-on surfaces or seating. Use a deck-specific Sikkens product for horizontal trafficable timber.
How many coats of Sikkens do I need?
It depends on the system. Bare vertical timber using Filter 7 Plus typically uses one coat of HLSe followed by two coats of Filter 7 Plus. HLSe can also be used as a three-coat standalone system where approved. Follow the exact product instructions.
Do I need to clean timber before applying Sikkens?
Yes. Timber should be clean, dry and free from loose old coatings and contamination. Sikkens offers dedicated Deck & Wood Cleaner plus a Tannin & Oil Remover for tannin-rich new timber.
Is Sikkens suitable for Australian weather?
Sikkens exterior Cetol products are designed for UV and weather exposure, but the system still needs to match the timber orientation and conditions. Horizontal decks and vertical cladding require different product choices.
Does Sikkens hide the timber grain?
The Cetol range is designed as translucent timber protection, so the grain remains visible. Final colour depends on timber species, previous coating and the number of coats.
Does Sikkens make water-based timber coatings?
Yes. Paint World stocks water-based Sikkens options such as Cetol Supernatural and BLX Pro alongside traditional oil-based systems.
